Counter Service Lunch at Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort – Day One

For our first meal at Disney World, we were very hungry and a bit overwhelmed with figuring out the choices for the Counter Service Dining Plan.  We didn’t utilize it to its best at this point, specifically with the kids’ drinks.

Kid’s Meal One – Macaroni and Cheese

Included –

  • macaroni and cheese
  • chocolate chip cookie
  • carrots
  • chocolate milk

Kid’s Meal Two – Pizza

  • Kid’s Cheese Pizza
  • Applesauce
  • Cookie
  • Chocolate Milk

Kid’s Meal Three – Pizza

  • Kid’s Cheese Pizza
  • Grapes
  • Cookie
  • Chocolate Milk

Adult Meal One (Me) – Fish Basket

  • Fish and fries
  • Cranberry/Apple/Raspberry Juice (which I took back to the room for later)
  • Grapes (I would have chosen a less healthy dessert, but the worker explaining our options said something like – “Well, you can choose something UNhealthy over there . . . or fruit over here.”)

Adult Meal Two (Hubby) – Muffaletta

  • Muffaletta with chips
  • Grapefruit juice (for later)
  • Fruit bowl (He chose his for the right reasons!)

The kids all loved their pizzas and were satisfied.  Hubby’s muffaletta was great and my fish was surprisingly fresh-tasting and good.  (I know, it’s what I ordered and yet somehow I was surprised it was good.)

Counter Service Dining at Disney’s Epcot – Yorkshire County Fish Shop – Dinner Day One

I just took one food picture for this post, because the options at Yorkshire County Fish Shop in Epcot are quite limited, though delicious.

This fish-and-chips shop came highly recommended, and was one that we really wanted to try.  There are no kids’ meals here, so the kids order the same meals as the adults.

We ordered five fish baskets.  Each included two pieces of fish, French fries, and a dessert.  The dessert choices were shortbread cookies or chips.

Mmmm-hmmm, chips.

Like . . . American potato-chips-in-a-bag.

For dessert.

Whatever.

The fish was good, and was plenty when eaten family style.  (Meaning, give Daddy whatever you don’t want.)  The kids didn’t love the shortbread, but I’m good with that since I LOVE it and it was easy to throw in our bag for later.

Using Snack Credits at Disney’s Epcot – Ice Cream Floats

I forgot to take pictures.

I know.  You just started reading this blog that is supposed to be pictures of everything a family of five ate at Disney World for a week, and already the author has failed.  It might be a good time for you to check out my disclaimer page.

I promise, if you keep reading, it will get better.

It was our first day there, and we were in a hurry to meet friends to use our fast-passes for Soarin’.  I had absent-mindedly said to my daughter, “Sure honey, next time we pass an ice-cream place we’ll get some.”

Did I really think that my steel-trap-minded five year old would forget?

We passed by the ice cream shop that is at the front of Epcot (across from the fountain), and stopped in for treats.

For five snack credits we got:

Two Coke floats made with Vanilla Bean hard-scooped ice cream.

Two Root Beer floats made with the same ice cream.

One very large, very messy, very melty and sticky and drippy cookies-and-cream waffle cone.

We slurped them down and only then did I remember this oh-yeah-I-said-I-was-going-to-photograph-everything-we-ate-at-Disney-World thing.

Trust me. They were great.

Counter Service Dining – Breakfast at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort (Snack Credits)

For our first breakfast, the kids ate granola bars and and pop-tarts that we brought from home.  (Stay tuned and you’ll see how UNnecessary this was.)

We used our Resort Refillable Mugs to get “free” coffee for hubby and me and hot chocolate for the kids.

Using snack credits, I got a cinnamon roll and hubby got a bagel with cream cheese.

Ummmm, that cinnamon roll was fantastic.  As in, one of the best I’ve ever eaten.  It seemed to be made of puff-pastry rather than regular dough.  And I’m sure that all of the airiness meant that it was low calorie.

Right?

Why yes.  There IS a bite or two out of that cinnamon roll.

Day two, and I was still getting used to this oh-so-I-should-really-take-a-picture-and-THEN-start-eating thing.

La Tortuga Mexican Restaurant – Quick/Counter Service Dining at Disney’s Magic Kingdom – Day 2

Just across from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, in Adventureland, is La Tortuga Mexican Restaurant.  I had read good reviews of this place, though I’ve also read that it isn’t always open during less busy seasons.

Kids:

Both boys ordered the quesadilla kids meal with applesauce, a cookie, and sprite.

My daughter ordered a Smucker’s Uncrustables PB&J with grapes, a cookie, and apple-juice.

Hubby ordered the beef nachos, which came with black beans and what turned out to be pico-de-gallo on top.  I’m not sure what it said on the menu, but I can’t imagine that it said pico-de-gallo.

Because we’re not fans of pico.

At all.

After picking out the onions, tomatoes, and green-peppers, he said it was good.

And here . . . is my taco salad.

A little disconcerting, huh?

There is a condiment bar with lots of fresh lettuce, shredded cheese, and salsa.  They also give you sour-cream packages.

Much better now.

This was actually very good.  The beef was good, typical taco meat.  I actually went back again to load up with some more lettuce (and fine, more cheese!) because I hadn’t mixed it up well enough at the beginning.

We ordered Diet Cokes as our adult drinks, and they were the very large (I’m guessing 32 oz) size.  Our adult meals also came with a dessert, but chocolate cake was the only option.  I remember this because I’m allergic to chocolate. (Sympathy comments are welcome.) I was nice and let the kids split my cake.  Thankfully, they didn’t get used to it.

These are, I admit, some of the worst food-pictures from this project.  They do get a little better.  If you feel like criticizing, I invite you to order a meal at a very crowded restaurant, seat your family of five at a table meant for four, put the food in front of your starving children, and then stop them all from eating while you arrange and photograph their food.

Once you have done that, feel free to come back and leave a comment about how easy it was for you.

Ice Cream Snacks in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland – Auntie Gravity’s – Day Two

We tried to follow the advice we’ve heard for years (but just couldn’t bring ourselves to follow when we went to Disney as newlyweds) and hit the parks early so we could take a break at the resort in the heat of the afternoon.

Just before leaving Magic Kingdom on our first day there, we stopped for snacks at Auntie Gravity’s Ice Cream Parlor in Tomorrowland to use Snack Credits from our Disney Counter/Quick Service Dining Plan.

Both boys got hot fudge sundaes.

My daughter ordered a soft-serve waffle cone (only slightly less-messy than her snack the night before).

I got a fantabulous-could-have-downed-three-of-them-in-that-heat strawberry-banana smoothie.

Notice how (except for the sundae) the pictures are getting slightly better.

Slightly.

Only the whipped cream has already been licked off of the sundae.

Hubby, not-yet-convinced that our snack credits were going to last the entire trip, didn’t get anything.

Read to the end, and you’ll see how his mind changed about that.

He did, however, help out by licking the drips off of our 5yo’s cone.

He’s sweet like that.

Quick Service (Counter) Dining Plan Dinner at Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort

Following our afternoon swim, we decided to eat dinner at the resort before heading back to Magic Kingdom.

The boys had no desire to try something new.  They loved the pizza at the resort.  (Keep reading and you’ll see a trend.)

  • Pizza
  • Cookie
  • Applesauce
  • Chocolate Milk (for the next morning)

Girl:

  • Turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy
  • Cornbread
  • Bagged carrots

I had the roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, cornbread, and corn.  For dessert, I got a Mickey Mouse rice-krispie treat on a stick.  (They also have ones partially dipped in chocolate.)

Hubby tried out the pasta bar.  You have a choice of types of pasta (penne, fettucine, etc.) sauces (alfredo, marinara, pesto, etc.) meat (chicken or shrimp), and a variety of other ingredients including spinach, mushrooms, olives, artichoke hearts, onions, tomatoes, etc.  They cook all of the fresh ingredients in front of you and combine them.  This also comes with a slice of bread.

He chose a banana as his “dessert” to have for breakfast the next day.

Show-off.

Hubby and I really loved our meals.  And we had plenty. We were full enough that I didn’t even eat my Mickey Krispy treat after we got back to the room that night.  Well, except for one ear.

By using our refillable mugs for our drinks, we had all of this to take back to the room.

Our Day 2 Breakfast – Disney’s Quick/Counter Service Dining Plan

Hubby and I had coffee in our resort refillable mugs, and the kids had hot chocolate in theirs.

The kids ate walmart’s-version-of-pop-tarts with the milk that they got with their supper the night before.

I had a granola bar with my milk, and hubby had his banana and one of the shortbreads from the Yorkshire County Fish Shop.

I promise, breakfasts did get better once we figured out how to best use our plan.

Counter Service Dining at Disney’s Animal Kingdom – Anandapur Local Foods Café (Asia)

Everything I read about the counter service dining options in Disney’s Animal Kingdom recommended Flame Tree Barbecue.  But when it was time for lunch, we were in Asia (not literally) and hubby isn’t a big fan of barbecue anyway.  He saw the Asian menu (go figure) and thought it sounded good.

It was.

Daughter got:

  • Chicken
  • Cookie
  • Apple slices
  • Apple-juice

9yo got:

  • Chicken
  • Cookie
  • Apple slices
  • Sprite

7yo:

  • Cheeseburger
  • Apple slices
  • Cookie
  • Sprite

Hubby:

  • Honey chicken (There is rice under the chicken.)
  • Frozen Lemonade
  • Large Diet Coke

I ordered:

  • Chicken Fried Rice

The chicken fried rice sounded good to me, but it was a snack credit instead of a meal.  A great deal for a snack credit, but it didn’t come with a drink or dessert.  Hubby’s Diet Coke was big enough to share, though, and I was fine.

I forgot to ask him how he felt about sharing his drink.

I’m sure he was fine.

We really liked this restaurant.  The chicken strips for the kids were actually strips, not just small nuggets.  The honey chicken came with rice, and hubby really liked it.  (I thought it was a little over-board on the honey flavor.)  My chicken fried rice was great, and the serving size was plenty for a meal.  (You can find my chicken fried rice recipe here – shameless promotion of my real blog.)

Spending Quick Service Dining Plan Snack Credits at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

At the end of our time at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, we were hot.

And exhausted.

And hot.  Wait . . . did I already say hot?

Well, we were.

We remembered seeing an “ice cream truck” but then discovered that we had already passed it before we started looking for it.  In an effort to not backtrack, we walked way farther than we should have  . . . and ended up having to backtrack to get to the park exit after finding another ice cream stand.

While trekking, my oldest son decided he wanted a pretzel for his snack.  A non-cold-and-refreshing pretzel.  His reasoning was that we NEVER had let him get one before (can’t remember him ever asking) and he wanted to take full advantage of this my-parents-are-actually-letting-me-get-snacks-at-amusement-parks-thing he had going.

Don’t worry.  It wasn’t half-eaten when we bought it.  I just forgot to take the picture at first.

We do have standards.

I also forgot to take a picture of my 5yo’s Mickey Mouse shaped ice-cream sandwich.  I’m pretty sure you can picture that one in your head though.

We finally made it to the not-behind-us-but-definitely-not-on-the-way-to-the-exit ice cream stand and hubby got a coke float and my 7yo son and I ordered soft-serve waffle cones.

Is there anything that tastes better than ice cream on a crazy-hot day?
